Job Summary:
The Deepwater Drilling Superintendent has overall project responsibility for the execution of offshore deepwater well programs (drilling, completion, workover) to ensure that operations are performed in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner. Focal point for the Well Site Supervisor for reviewing daily operations and program changes.
Reports directly to the Project Manager.  Wellsite Supervisors report to and are mentored by the Deepwater Drilling Superintendent.
Interfaces with Drilling Contractor / Rig Management
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Demonstrates QHSE leadership in the project including regular visits to the wellsite
  • Ensures compliance with Company’s Policies and Standards.
  • Attends office and wellsite safety meetings (where possible)
  • Conducts QHSE / rig audits with the QHSE Coordinator
  • Ensures HSE and SQ incidents reported in QUEST in a timely manner
  • Participates in HSE and SQ event investigations
  • Reviews wellsite RIR’s (Risk Identification Reports), follows up, and provides feedback
  • Leads SQ meetings with key contractors e.g. rig company


  • Attends / conducts a Pre-Spud Meeting at the rig site with all operation staff and involved parties (service company representatives)
  • Forecasts and plans medium and long term to anticipate resources to meet program requirements e.g. forward rig schedule, WSS assignment etc. Daily follow up of operations, assesses and reports physical progress against plan
  • Anticipates operational changes and needs, revises appropriate plans to ensure continued successful operations
  • Discusses program changes with WSS and project team
  • Follows Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Participates in the selection and evaluation of service companies, suppliers and equipment
  • Ensures cost control of the program versus AFE
  • Coordinates the operational activities of Schlumberger Segments and Third Parties to ensure compliance with work program, optimum efficiency and service quality
  • Manages incentive programs
  • Attends the rig as need for critical wellsite activities e.g. well control events
  • Assures the proper training and development for the WSS and other personnel under his/her direct supervision


  • Conducts daily meetings with rig (s)
  • Communicates with rig as needed to review operations
  • Ensures proper communication with project organization including progress Vs plan

Mentors Wellsite Supervisors, Mentors Well Engineers in operations
Previous Experience and Competencies:
BSc Degree in Engineering, preferably in Petroleum Engineering or relevant previous experience as Wellsite Supervisor
Competencies to be kept current:

  • 25 years experience in Well Construction activities as a Well Site Supervisor and/or Well Engineer
  • Experience on managing Ultra Deepwater Operations for IOCs or NOCs in Brazil or North Sea or GOM or West Africa
  • Experience in West Africa is a plus.
  • Portuguese speaking is a plus.
